DOBBINS — For the first time in a few years, Bullards Bar Reservoir was finally living up to its old reputation as a premier kokanee fishery.

Due to a diligent kokanee management program sponsored by the DFG and Project Kokanee, the lake appears to be back on the road to its former glory, according to Craig Robertson at Emerald Cove Marina. Trollers were catching limits of the landlocked sockeyes running dodger/hoochie and dodger/Wedding Rings combos tipped with corn — standard gear for kokanee salmon.

“We have great news, the kokanee are back,” Robertson said. “Boaters trolling dodger/Wedding Rings and dodger/hoochies at 30 feet deep around the corner from the marina and up into Willow Creek were catching limits of fat 12-inch kokes. The DFG/Project Kokanee planted 100,000 fingerlings in the lake a couple of weeks ago, so the recovery of the kokanee fishing is a long term strategy by these organizations that will benefit fishermen for years to come.”

Robertson said he fished up in the Willow Creek arm and found kokanee and rainbow trout hitting Kastmaster spoons near the large raft of debris floating about midway up the arm.

Guide  Ron Gandolfi fished the lake for bass and his clients lost several 4- to 7-pound spots and landed two 6 pounders and a 4½  pounder throwing Senkos into mudlines on points and in the backs of the flatter pockets in 5 to 20 feet of water.
