FOLSOM — For all the bass fishermen who have been frustrated trying to catch bass at Folsom Lake, this is THE time to be out on the water, and if you can’t catch bass there now, you might consider giving up fishing altogether. However, the rainbow trout anglers are doing great, and there's some nice salmon in the mix, too. It’s not exactly “no-brainer” fishing though. In spite of what anglers might think, fishing reaction baits like cranks and swimbaits has not been as effective as slowly working plastics like Robo-Worms, drop-shotted or dartheaded. Fish are staging in a range from close to shore to about 15 feet off points and in flooded brush. Weightless Senkos and swimbaits might get some strikes, as well, from larger fish. Although most fish being caught have been spots weighing 1.5 to 2.5 pounds, some slugs weighing over 5 pounds, and a very few approaching 10 pounds are being taken, too.As for trout and landlocked king salmon, Mike Keeling Lincoln never had caught a fish at Folsom Lake, but he did pretty well with Big John Enos of Big John’s Guide Service last week at catching 4 kings, and a nice rainbow in about 4 hours of fishing topped by a beautiful 20-inch king weighing about 3 pounds. They were fishing by the dam and caught most of their fish Speedy Shiners at about 30 feet. And, Jerry Lampkin of TNG Motorsports Guide Service has also been doing well, and on one of his trips took 11 nice rainbows near the dam toplining a Sidekick trailed by a nightcrawler 200 feet behind the boat. The kings were caught on a pink and copper Vance’s dodger trailed 6 inches behind by a pink Hoochie at about 60 feet. Fishing slowed on a subsequent outing, but he still managed two 17-inch rainbows and a 20-inch king taken by Joe Fanilli from Escondido up the North Fork on a watermelon dodger with a Crystal Basin Wee Tad in pink. |
