FRESNO — Guide Dick Nichols reports the snow is finally falling on the empty Shaver Lake and refilling of the lake should begin the first week of February. Southern California Edison (SCE) held a good amount of water in the high country above, and in Huntington Lake, to help quickly restore the lake to normal early spring levels.

The Shaver Lake Trophy Trout Project (SLTTP) voted at it's last meeting to purchase an additional 200 to 300 trophy-size trout 5 to 6 pounds to go with the already purchased trophy trout for 2013. 2013 should be a great year with 6 pounders available.

Of course, they join an estimated 80,000 trout plant that will begin in about 2 months. Of those 80,000 trout, about 6,000 to 7,000 will be of trophy size.

With the snow, Huntington is accessible for shore fishermen and possibly by the hardy aluminum boat anglers that might be able to drag a lightweight craft down to the waters edge. Bank fishermen have been doing very well up to this storm with Power Bait in yellow, green and orange. Bankies have caught some very large bow' through the fall and early winter before the snow.

The SLTTP meets the 3rd Wednesday of each month at the Tiffany Pines meeting room. Captain Jack Yandell and Shaver Lake fishing guide Dick Nichols, will be featured at Shaver Lake fishing seminars at Herb Bauer's in Fresno on Feb. 23 at 6 p.m. and at Valley Rod and Gun, in Clovis, on March 31 in the early afternoon. Long time Shaver Lake resident Lee Gates will be on the agenda and present a historical slide show at each event. Yandell and Nichols will also be using the slide show in their presentation.

Topics to be covered in the slide show, current photo's of Shaver, along with photo's of the late 1800s. Nichols will provide photo's of the lake bottom, cover the hot fishing spots of the lake and what it takes to catch the trophy-size trout. Yandell, Shaver's kokanee expert, will cover the progress of the Shaver Lake Trophy Trout Project, a slide show of last years trophy trout that were caught, his recommendations on catching big fish and the use of the downriggers.
