GEORGETOWN — Hell Hole Reservoir was producing limits of quality kokanee this past week for boaters, and both shore anglers and trollers were picking up some nice rainbows and browns. For trollers taking the time to search for macks in deep water, there is a good population of big lakers in this impoundment, too. “I talked to the host at the campgrounds at Hell Hole the other day and she said that trollers were catching some beautiful, fat 14- to 16-inch kokanee,” Pete Robinson at the Georgetown Ranger Station said. “One of the campers had a smoker going and gave her a couple of fish and she just raved about how delicious they were.” Ken Mathis at Ken’s Custom Tackle reported that one of his pro-staffers lived near Hell Hole and fished the lake regularly. “This has been a phenomenal year for kokanee already,” Mathis said. “Troll an orange/purple hoochie behind a Code Blue dodger at 26 feet deep in the Narrows for some really nice fish.” Robinson reported that shore anglers using the Upper Hell Hole campground and trollers were all doing well at the inlet for a mix of browns and rainbows. The trollers were mostly catching 14- to 16-inch browns toplining Rapalas in the early morning. The shore guys were using bait and lures to catch their fish in the shallows where the Rubicon River entered the lake. Mathis said he had heard that a 17-pound brown came out of the lake two weeks ago, but WON could not confirm this rumor. Mathis mentioned that trollers who could locate macks within 20 to 30 feet of the bottom in deep water on their electronics could catch some 5 to 7 pounders running Rapalas and dodger/herring combos through the fish. He said these fish could be found all over the lake especially near structure. |
