KIRKWOOD — Lightning struck twice for one lucky Granite Bay troller at Caples Lake this past week when he caught two big Mackinaws in two days off Emigrant Bay. Shore fishermen were picking up a mack or two on bait from the Wood’s Creek inlet, too.
“Jesse Castellanos of Granite Bay was up here last Thursday and picked up a beautiful 10-pound Mackinaw trolling an Apex 20 feet deep off Emigrant Bay,” John Voss at Caples Lake Resort said. “He was so excited about that fish he came back on Friday and caught an 8 pounder in the same place on a Rapala trolled 25 feet deep. Now he says he's going to stay up here for a few days to see what more he can catch.”
Voss reported that a family fishing from shore at Wood’s Creek inlet caught a 4-pound mack and 4 nice rainbows on nightcrawlers and Power Bait, so trollers don’t necessarily have a choke hold on the Mackinaws. The dam and spillway fishing hasn’t been on fire but fish were being caught on a mix of flies, bait and lures.
