Stripers improve, trout solid at Los Vaqueros

LIVERMORE — Trout fishing remains good at Los Vaqueros Reservoir, where striper action also improved last week.

Esli Garcia of San Jose caught a 12.26-pound striper on Dec. 29, while using Power Bait in Cowboy Cove. The whopper striper was a nice surprise for the angler who was fishing for trout. “The girl was super happy,” said Nick Sanders of Los Vaqueros Marina.

“The fishing has been really good,” Sanders said. “There are lots of trout, lots of stripers and a decent amount of catfish coming in as well. The best trout fishing is in Cowboy Cove and out in the boats. Power Bait is working best, and Mice Tails are working.”

The lake was planted with 1,000 pounds of rainbows last week by Mt. Lassen Trout Farms. Another 1,000 pounds are expected this week. “Some people are limiting on trout,” Sanders said. “Just about everyone is catching something.”

Stripers are biting in Cowboy Cove and at the marina dock. Cut anchovies are working best. “There are pretty good keepers between 18 and 24 inches,” Sanders said. Lots of shakers also are biting.

Anglers fishing anchovies or chicken liver from boats near the marina are getting catfish. Some catfish also are being caught from shore at Cowboy Cove and South Cove.
