Plenty of steelhead in American River

BY JIM JONES/WON Staff WriterPublished: Feb 03, 2012

RANCHO CORDOVA — Nimbus Hatchery, just below the Hazel Ave. Bridge is loaded with steelhead, and a couple of hundred, at least were jammed together in the holding pond at the top of the fish ladder when this writer toured the hatchery Sunday afternoon.

Of course that does not mean that everybody trying for them is hooking them, but it’s reassuring to know that, at least, they are present. A discussion with DFG survey crews confirmed that fact when they said that they saw one steelhead caught in Nimbus Basin while they surveyed anglers in that popular fishing spot. But, that’s steelheading — “the fish of a thousand casts.”

Jerry Lampkin of TNG Motorsports Guide Services’ clients did pretty well, landing two nice fish, a hatchery steelie estimated to weigh 8 or 9 pounds, which was released, and a smaller wild fish of about 16 inches. Both were taken on side-drifted orange Corkies with cocktail shrimp on a drift from Sailor Bar to Sunrise Blvd.
