Trout bite remains hot at Lake Shasta, bassing improves in changing conditions

Western Outdoor NewsPublished: Jan 27, 2012

REDDING — Phil’s Propellers in Redding reported an improved bass bite with the majority of spotted bass still taken dartheading, drop-shotting, or using Senkos in natural browns or greens. The reaction bite is still non-existent, as there hasn’t been sufficient inclement weather to stir up the fish. Even with the inflow from the recent storms, the majority of water is saturating the ground instead of flowing through the creeks. Once the ground is saturated, the reaction bite with spinnerbaits should start up at the creek mouths in the moving water.

The lake edges have started to stain in some areas, and the fish should be moving up with the decreased water clarity. Prior to the storms, the fish have been "all over the map" at depths from 15 to 50 feet.

On the trout front, the action remains very good for rainbows to 18 inches with Shasta Tackle’s Humdingers in orange/gold or Captain America and orange CrippLures scented with Pro-Cure’s Garlic Plus at depths from 10 to 25 feet. Rick Kennedy of Tight Lines Guide Service said, “We couldn’t get out all four lines before we got hit on a recent trip in the Jones Valley section of the lake.” The lake is currently at 1,010.76 feet in elevation and 67 percent of capacity.
