Fishing ‘good and plenty’ at Shasta

REDDING — Fish early and fish late at Lake Shasta so you’ll beat the heat and recreational boaters, and you can plan on catching plenty of fish of most species.

Jack and Jim Rowin of Manton and Charlie Cook of Panama City, FL fished with WON staffer Pat Young at Lake Shasta this past Wednesday and found lots of trout and salmon biting. "While we were prepping the boat to launch, I noticed five or six boats sitting in a tight circle right at the buoy line in front of the Centimudi ramp at the dam,” Young said. “The meter showed the fish schooled up at 50 feet as we passed by and began to troll. As soon as I dropped our Sling Blade/hoochie combos down to the right depth, we were hooked up.”

“We wound up with 3 rainbows to 16½ inches and 2 salmon before the bite shut off as the sun got higher in the sky, since it was 95-degrees that day on the water,” Young said. “Get out at dawn for the best fishing.”

“I also talked to a couple of bass anglers as they pulled out of the water and they reported catching so many bass they decided to quit fishing early due to exhaustion,” Young said. “They said they caught over 65 bass to 2¼ pounds in less than 4 hours and that most of the fish were small males still hanging around the shallows, but they did release 20 keepers, all post-spawners.”
