REDDING — While the fishing has been hot, the weather has been even hotter at Lake Shasta, but a cooling trend this coming week should help pick the bite back up. “King salmon fishing has been off the hook and we were catching many of our kings trolling around 70 to 100 feet deep,” Lisa Portocarrero at Outdoor Adventures Sport Fishing said. “But as it heated up and the waters warmed up, fish are going down deep. The Dry Creek area has been the best.” Portocarrero said her husband and guide Kirk, fished Sunday and it was tough. “This coming week, working the main body will be the best bet. “Prior to this heat wave, we were catching rainbows first thing in the morning on the surface from 6 to 8 a.m. and then as the day and water warmed, rainbows have been going down to around 30 to 40 feet deep. Kirk’s been using CrippLures and Wiggle Hoochies,” she said. “The Bridge Bay area around the buoys has been producing some nice rainbow trout.” “Bass fishing has been excellent around the shorelines,” Portocarrero said. “Most of the fish range between 10 and 15 inches. Ripbaits and crankbaits run along the rocky shores has been the best bet for numbers of bass. For some of the bigger fish, a 4-inch plastic worm has been the ticket.” ![]() SHASTA KING — Judy Clatterback of Los Angeles caught this 6-pound king salmon at Lake Shasta trolling shad and Wiggle Hoochies 80 to 100 feet deep, with Pro Guide Kirk Portocarrero of Sac River Guide on July 6, and found the fishing good. |
