Sacramento: Shad spread throughout American River

SACRAMENTO — Shad are now spread throughout the American River, but high water is limiting where anglers can successfully wade. Some of the flyfishing guides, meanwhile, are doing well anchoring and fishing.

americanshadAMERICAN SHAD — Shelby Crawford caught her first-ever shad while fly fishing on the American River on a guided trip out of Kiene’s Sporting Goods on Friday, May 17. This was her first time fishing for shad. “That smile says it all,” said Chris Crawford, who sent in the photo.

“There are fish all the way through the American, from Sunrise to Sailor Bar,” said Larry Barnes of Sacramento Pro Tackle. “The fishing is good. The flows are still pretty high on the American and most places they normally wade have way too much water. People are anchoring in their boats in the high water.”

Anglers are catching shad wading at Ancil Hoffman Park and Gristmill Access. Barnes said fishing will begin to taper off in the lower American, but shad will remain strong higher up near Sailor Bar.

Stripers also are following the shad. Fish to 10 pounds have been reported at Discovery Park, while anglers also are seeing signs of stripers upriver.

Flows at Fair Oaks have remained just under 8,000 cfs all week. Folsom Lake is nearly full, with inflows more than outflows, so more water could soon be released as well.
