Lunker cutthroat trout hitting at Pyramid Lake

SUTCLIFFE, Nev. — Two big Lahontan cutthroat trout were caught this past week at Pyramid Lake — a 19½ pounder from shore and a 12½-pound fish by a troller. Pyramid Lake has long been known to produce some big cutts and apparently there are still a few left due to a diligent fisheries management program run by the Paiute tribe.

“Matt Ceccarelli of Reno landed the biggest fish weighed in this season — a 19½–pound cutthroat,” George Molino at the Pyramid Lake Store said.  “Matt fishes the lake all the time and was casting a black jig off the shore from an area just south of the marina. He normally would have been fly fishing, but it was too windy so he was casting the jig on spinning gear.” Sometimes it’s just better to be lucky than good!

“I also weighed in a nice 12½-pound cutthroat for Geoff Roberts,” Molino said.  “Roberts was fishing with a friend of mine on the south end of the lake off Wino Beach when he hooked the fish on a chartreuse spoon while trolling.” Molino went on to say that the trolling had been fair. He took a nephew out for a couple of hours over the weekend and they landed a 6 pounder on an Apex plus a couple of 18- to 19-inch keepers while fishing 12 to 30 feet deep.

Joe Mendes at Eagle Eye Charters reported that fishing along the west side of the lake was slower than expected for this time of year. He was concentrating his efforts on the east side at Anderson, Red Bay, Hell’s Kitchen, and north of the Pyramid at the “Wall” at 50 to 60 feet deep. Mendes said that 12 fish a day would be a good day’s fishing right now.
