Pyramid Lake cutthroat action greatly improved

SUTCLIFFE, Nev. — Warmer water temps improved the cutthroat trout bite at big Pyramid Lake this past week and now boaters were seeing dozens of fish caught after a day on the troll. Shore fishing has improved also for anglers fishing near the areas on the lake where access to deeper water is close at hand.

“My Sunday trip was very successful for the two clients I had onboard — 31 cutthroats to 7¼ pounds and we lost a much bigger fish,” Joe Mendes at Eagle Eye Charters said. “I headed over to the east side of the lake to Hell’s Kitchen and we trolled U-20 FlatFish in original frog and perch patterns at 25 to 35 feet deep. We only fished 4½ hours, so we got bit on the average about every 9 minutes  — that’s pretty good action!! John Burroughs, Jr. of Reno caught the 7 pounder.” Mendes said he was running the downriggers at 25 to 35 feet deep, and also had toplines out with 2- and 3-ounce banana weights set 125 to 175 feet back.

Carla Molino at the Pyramid Lake Store reported that shore fishing was vastly improved for anglers fishing at the Block House and Spider Point where the drop-offs were close in. The shore anglers were doing best on spoons, spinners, and jigs.
