TOPAZ — The weather that soaked the North State on the west side of the Sierra produced much lighter rain and snow than predicted at Topaz Lake in the Eastern Sierra. Fishing conditions remained great for a large group of anglers who make an annual trip to Topaz in January and lots of limits of trout were in the freezer by the end of the weekend. “We had a group of 51 anglers here from the Auburn/Loomis/Colfax area over the weekend and they were all catching fish,” Linda Fields at Topaz Landing Marina said. “The south end of the lake appeared to be the hot spot for both the trollers and shore anglers who brought in lots of limits of rainbows for cleaning and weighing. The biggest fish weighed as of Sunday morning was a 3-pound, 7-ounce rainbow taken by Shawn Lenz of Auburn while fishing from the shore with Power Bait.”Fields said that the weather was good all weekend except for Friday night when the worst of the storm blew through. Fishing conditions otherwise were good and the number of fish caught reflected a mixture of talented anglers and the great stocking program by the NDOW. The Topaz Lodge Derby is still running until April 15, so remember to weigh all fish over 2 pounds in at the lodge for raffle tickets for the end of derby drawing. Tagged fish worth $100 cash are still swimming around in the lake, too. |
