WALKER — The West Walker River will be stocked by Mono County and the Northern Mono County Chamber of Commerce over the next two weeks. much to the delight of visiting fishermen. The DFG has been making weekly plants of catchable rainbows, so there should be no shortage of fish in the system for the rest of the season.
“Mono County is supposed to be making a trophy trout plant in time for the July 1 (Fourth of July) weekend, but they have to get a contract signed before it can take place,” Sam Foster at the Toiyabe Motel said. “Hopefully the county will get the paperwork in order this week in time for the plant. The Northern Mono County Chamber of Commerce on the other hand will definitely be making a 750-pound plant of 3- to 5-pound rainbows in the West Walker the week of July 8.” Both Mono County and the Chamber will be making more plants later this season.
Foster reported that the flows in the West Walker were nice and low — 170 cfs — “outstanding for fly fishing.” With the DFG making weekly plants of catchable rainbows into both the Little Walker and West Walker, there were easy limits being caught by anyone putting a line in the water. Foster said that some fishermen were still picking up a few of the previously planted trophy fish in the 2- to 4-pound range along with all the planters they wanted to catch.
