WINTERS — Strong winds and thunderstorms have plagued the north state this past week, but the fishing at Lake Berryessa has continued to improve despite the conditions.

“Berryessa is starting to fish better for kokanee,” said Troy Barr of T-Roy’s Guide Service. “The bite this week seems to have improved compared to the past couple of weeks, although we still had to cover a significant amount of water to find a consistent bite. The fish don’t seem to be really schooled up at this point and if they are, then not many fish in the schools are biting. Sometimes you have to cover a good distance of water before you find your next bite.

“As conditions warm and stabilize the fishing will continue to improve,” Barr said. “It seems like we are finding our best results when we work open water between the entrance of the narrows down to Big Island while making turns and changing speeds just to change things up. The fish we are catching are coming on RMT Dodgers with Radical Glow tubes. We are also catching some fish on Uncle Larry’s spinners, RMT hoochies tipped with Pautkze Firecorn soaked with Mike's scents. Fish are sitting between 30 and 42 feet deep with water temperatures starting at 65 degrees in the morning, reaching nearly 70 degrees on a warm afternoon,” Barr said.
