Limits of crab, limits of rockfish for San Francisco Bay Area boats

BY CAPT. DAVID BACON/WON Staff WriterPublished: Dec 11, 2018

BERKELEY — Skippers throughout the San Francisco Bay Area fleet who are still making late-season trips are pleased by the quality and quantity of the fish and crab. Shore fishing was very good for perch and a few striped bass.

The weather dictated daily whether or not to go fishing, but once out there it was game on! Scott Sutherland at Berkeley Charterboats said, “Limits of rockcod and limits of crab are still the norm. By this time last year, crabbing was nearly dead, so we really like this change. Conditions on the ocean keep us tied up half the time, but we’re getting out a few days a week.”

Happy Hooker got a few trips in on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Thursday’s lingcod count was solid at 36 lings for 23 guys. The boat scored limits of crab on every trip and stuffed sacks with rockfish, according to Capt. Jonathan Smith.

For Fish Emeryville boats the saltwater action remained the same, as the crab combo trips continued to kick out limits of both. Early in the week a stubborn easterly wind kept the boats along the coast. Sea Wolf and New Huck Finn fished the Marin Coast Monday and Tuesday finding excellent coastal rockfish and crab action. The Lingcod also cooperated with a combined score of 43 lingcod, to go along with 57 limits of rockfish and crab. Thursday and Friday the offshore weather improved, and the song remained the same.

Pacific Pearl , New Huck Finn and Sea Wolf targeted the Farallon Islands and returned with a combined 91 limits of rockfish and crab, topping the day off with 17 lingcod. Capt. Jay Yokomizo on New Huck Finn said, "With the light commercial pressure, the crabbing should remain good through the month of December". Andy Guiliano noted that for the balance of the month the boats are running Crab Combo's daily and on select days traditional rockfish/lingcod trips and crab only trips.

Surf fishers got out on the good days when they could play on the beaches from Capitola up to near the gate. Barred surfperch and redtail perch were the main targets although there are always a cadre of people casting bucktails and hardbaits for striped bass. The bass bite was better inside the Bay, down near Hunter Point.
