BODEGA BAY — Fishing seemed easy on calm water out of Bodega Bay and salmon to the high 20s stressed tackle, yet the average fish was a mid-teener.

Capt. Bob Moncton on charterboat Reel-lentless said,”Salmon went WFO in Bodega, with early limits the last 2 days just 2 miles from our Harbor. It is a great grade of fish with our smallest a 15 pounder. All our fish came on straight rigged herring but almost everything is working. Big fish of the week goes to Jack Kelch of Sacramento who caught a whopping a 28-pounder.”

Capt. Rick Powers of Bodega Bay Bait & Tackle, who runs the charterboat New Sea Angler said, “We’ve got bang-up combo fishing. On Friday we had 19 anglers catch 24 salmon to 26 pounds plus we hauled up 114 Dungeness crabs to 2.5 pounds. Then on Saturday we had 33 people quickly limit out on rockfish plus 6 lingcod to 28 pounds so we switched over and trolled up 11 salmon to 18 pounds. That’s good fishing!”

Hotspots for salmon this week included; Carmet, Bodega Whistle Buoy, Bird Rock and Elephant Rock. Capt. Powers pointed out that a DFG Biologist checked in over 400 salmon coming into Bodega Bay on Saturday alone.

Surf perch bit along local beaches, especially at high tide. The best natural bait was reported to be grass shrimp. Most surf perchers continued to bait up with Berkley Gulp! 2” sandworms in camo or bloody color on Carolina rigs.
