Northern CA Saltwater Fishing Report

Bodega salmon action strong at first, then a switch to rockfish, lingcod for results

BODEGA BAY — Solid counts of salmon early in the week out of Bodega Bay gave way to lower counts by mid-week, prompting a change of plan. Groundfish proved willing to fill sacks and in particular, lingcod devoured baits and lures alike.

Capt. Rick Powers at Bodega Bay Bait & Tackle, skipper of the New Sea Angler, said, “We saw lingcod action this week that was unbelievable. I had three great fishermen — Stu Miller, Mike Erion and Dale Kunz — team up on a wide open lingcod bite and haul in 16 lingcod in 2 hours. All were released but the limits.”

The New Sea Angler is running combo trips to target whatever wants to bite.

“Salmon are still biting in 40 to 50 fathoms, which tells me they are not yet ready to come inshore and run the rivers. We’ll have them for a while yet,” said Capt. Powers.

LINGCOD ACTION HAS been great off the Marin coastline, and Capt. Gregg Holland of Santa Rosa shows off a nice ling he caught while fishing with Scott Green of Windsor, who took the photo, aboard a private boat out of Bodega Bay. They filled their limits of rockfish and lings using P-Line's new swimbait, the 6-inch Kick "R" Minnow.
