Northern CA Saltwater Fishing Report

Eureka action is perch in the surf, crabs in the bay, clams in the sand

EUREKA — With perch to the north, crabs in the Bay and clams to the south, Eureka offers plenty of variety while waiting for their own salmon season opener.

Red tail perch went on the bite this past week north of Eureka at Dry Lagoon, where action was very good on surprisingly large red tails. Most perch caught ranged from 15 to 18 inches, which earns some bragging rights for successful anglers. The very best action came on incoming tides and the bait of choice was clam, fished on a surf leader or Carolina rig.

Husky crabs are still to be had inside Humboldt Bay. “One fellow reported he put out 4 pots by the red can in the north side of the Bay and got 15 commercial-size crabs,” said WON Field Reported, Lonnie Dollarhide.

Clammers had reason to rejoice because razors are fairly easy to load up on right across from Gills restaurant at King Salmon, just south of Eureka. Just an hour or two of digging at extreme low tides was all it took to bring home plenty for a family dinner.

“I stopped by the pier at Englund Marine and the sports crabbers were out in full force. From what I saw there were a lot of rock crabs in their rings. Nobody was fishing, though, because Humboldt is muddy from all the dirty water coming out of the Eel River,” added Dollarhide.
