Salmon abundant off Half Moon Bay, stripers bite for beach, pier anglers at Pacifica

HALF MOON BAY/PACIFICA — Boats stayed in the harbor at Half Moon Bay for most of the week before the weather broke, finally allowing salmoneers out to find their quarry, and good counts resulted for those who found pockets of fish. A credible striped bass bite continued near Pacifica, where shore-based crabbers also did well on Dungeness and other crabs.

Salmon are plentiful off of Half Moon Bay, yet the weather allowed boats out infrequently enough that pockets of fish had to be found again each time. For those boats that found the fish, results were good. With better weather forecast, productive areas will be found and the fish counts are expected to climb accordingly.

On Thursday the Queen of Hearts scored a fish per rod, Friday saw 13 fish to 13 pounds for 25 people, but it is important to note that on both days there were many fish hooked and lost due to “operator error.” Sherry Ingles at Half Moon Bay Sportfishing and Tackle said, “Rockfish and lingcod opened up below Pigeon Point and while we haven’t yet made a run down there, we do plan to when the weather settles. We expect epic fishing.”

Striped bass and perch bit for pier and beach anglers alike at Pacifica, according to Cheryl Jimno at the Rusty Hook in Pacifica, who said, “Stripers have been biting Hair Raisers, Super Strikes and Bombers for people fishing the beaches. My customers have been hooking up at Rockway, Morey’s Point and Linda Mar.” Some of the better bites occurred around high tides, but it is far from a hard rule as anglers also scored during periods of strong tidal movement. Pier fishers also hooked into stripers, but always on bait including blood worms, pile worms, anchovies or sardines.

Crab fishing is very good for Dungeness, red and rock crabs. “Snares were used when the weather was rough and hoops were used when the water was calm,” said Jimno. Most snares or hoops were baited with squid, mackerel or sardines.
