Half Moon Bay: Salmon and striped bass counts promising for anglers

HALF MOON BAY — With multiple good bites available to Half Moon Bay people, fishing was bound to be good. Salmon were taken in limit quantities and rockfish and lingcod reef zones were productive. Striped bass and perch bit well along area beaches.

Huli Cat went salmon fishing outside Golden Gate Bridge in 280 feet of water. “It was a pick, but we landed 9 limits for 9 anglers by the end of the day, and ocean conditions were flat with a slight breeze,” said Capt. Michael Cabanas. Steve Tucker managed a 16-pound salmon and Mike Sieczko took a 10 pounder. Riptide went for salmon also and had a good week. Over the weekend the bite faltered a bit, but expectations are for that to be a blip in the long-term great fishing season.

dependableDEPENDABLE AND GREAT eating rockfish are a staple aboard party boats, and Capt. Tom Mattusch of the Huli Cat out of Pillar Point Harbor in Half Moon Bay shows off the quality of fish from the Deep Reef on shrimpflies. The vessel is now running salmon and rockfish trips.

Huli Cat went salmon fishing again Sunday, north of Pillar Point. Peter Matysuk got a 16-pound salmon on an anchovy. Jason Poon caught a 14 pounder also on an anchovy, and Jenny Feix with and 8 pounder. Thirteen limits for 13 anglers were taken for the day.

Rockfish and lingcod went with the flow and responded to shrimpflies tipped with squid strips, anchovies or shrimp pieces. Annette at Half Moon Bay Sportfishing reported that Queen of Hearts worked the rockfish hard and scored well with limits of rockfish and some impressive lingcod. Deep Reef was a prime rockfish destination, but spots down the coast like Pescadero also put out fish.

Surf fishing went wild along local beaches. Perch were aggressive, but often shouldered out of the way by marauding striped bass. Marque Glisson at New Coastside Bait & Tackle in Pacifica reported huge (he capitalized the word HUGE) striper runs in Pacifica at Linda Mar and Mori Point. He said they are hitting topwater lures like Super Strike Little Neck Poppers.
