HALF MOON BAY — Partyboat trips for rockfish and lingcod or rockfish/crab combos out of Half Moon Bay were successful and comfortable due to calm conditions. Crabbing held up, though the counts came down somewhat for both boat-based and shore-based crabbers out of Half Moon Bay and up at Pacifica.

Huli Cat went out for a rockcod and crab combo. Dave Holsenback caught an impressive 8-pound cabezon using a bar. Scott Kramer caught his first two lingcod and one was 16 pounds. Kathryn Padget got a sizable ling that came up hitchhiking. Nick Medina and Walter Collins caught nice rockfish and Dan Frexler took a limit of hefty lings. The key to nearly all catches was using shrimp fly rigs.

At Half Moon Bay Sportfishing and Tackle Shop, crab gear sold briskly to boaters and shore-based anglers alike. The harbor area was busy and people lined up to drop hoops or cast snares. Partyboats Queen of Hearts and Riptide offered rockfish/lingcod trips to points south including Pescadero, Ritz Carlton and Martins Beach. Lings bit very well, with 60 lings combined between the past 3 trips on Queen of Hearts . Boats are fishing in shallower water again due to depth restrictions, so there were some very impressive cabezon taken, according the Sherry Ingles at Half Moon Bay Sportfishing. Aboard those boats, shrimp flies took the majority of fish.

Crabbing at Pacifica was popular, with good crowds of people daily. Marque Glisson at New Coastside Bait & Tackle said, “Crabbing has slowed somewhat since the commercial opener, but we are still getting them. Snares are the number 1 producer, traps are number 2 and nets are number 3. The bait of choice for all 3 is squid.”

A SWIMBAIT ENTICED this 6-pound vermillion for Joel Ramirez of Fremont during a rockcod/crab combo trip aboard the Huli Cat out of Half Moon Bay during a flat, calm morning.
