MONTEREY — Salmon fishing out of Monterey was spotty during the week with just a few fish per boat being the best a crew could do, but then late in the week, salmon fishing became super-charged all over again. Meanwhile, rockfish and lingcod bit so well that people had a viable option to salmon fishing. “The salmon that showed up on Friday are absolutely massive,” said Capt. Chris Arcoleo of Chris’ Sportfishing in Monterey. The Star of Monterey on Saturday had 26 people catch 32 salmon between 15 and 27 pounds near Point Pinos. Great fishing continued over the weekend. Before that however, it was scratch and pick fishing. “Rockfish are darn steady now,” continued Capt. Arcoleo. On Friday the Checkmate ran to Cypress Point to catch limits of both lingcod and rockfish for 15 satisfied passengers. Capt. Brian Cutting of Randy’s Sportfishing reported similar experiences… a slow week followed by excellent fishing beginning Friday. “These are big fish, up shallow and the action is steady. The average is 15 to 16 pounds but there are much larger fish mixed in and those bigger ones frequently bust off,” said Capt. Cutting. On Friday, Capt. John aboard the Sur Randy helped his 13 passengers catch 13 salmon for a solid fish per rod. On Saturday the Sur Randy had 17 salmon for 25 anglers and the Chubasco posted 17 salmon for 30 people. “Stripers are chewing sand crabs at Long Walk and at Monterey Dunes,” said Will Graham at The Tackle Box in Salinas. Gianfranco Guarrera of The Compass in Seaside also spoke of a decent bite at Marina Beach on lures including Daiwa SP Minnows. |
