Shasta trout, bass and weather are hot

REDDING — “Shasta Lake trout fishing has been as hot as the air temperature, and my client ‘Greg’ landed over 20 yesterday, all while trolling Sep’s Dodgers and shad imitations lathered in Pro Cure Carpspit,” said guide Jeff Goodwin.

BIG BELLY ’BOW — The rainbows out of Shasta Lake are big and fat right now, as evidenced by this big one caught by Alicia Meuser of Canby, Oregon, fishing with her family with guide Scott Caldwell of SC Guide Service.

“The fat trout have been holding between 80 and 120 feet deep, and if you find the shad, you find a lot of fish and a lot of fun,” he said. “These trout fight hard and make long runs like steelhead. The boat traffic has been light during the weeks.”

Shasta Lake has been fishing very well, especially for rainbow trout. King salmon and brown trout are also being caught, but with less frequency, said Goodwin.

Rainbow trout fishing on the main body of Shasta has been outstanding and Goodwin has been seeing easy limits of trout on every trip. Multi-pound trout are caught daily and some are breeching the 5-pound range. Most of the good fishing has been from 80 to 10 feet down. The surface water temps are hovering around 80 degrees.

Gabe Frankell at Phil’s Propeller Repair and Fishing Tackle said lots of 2- and 3-pound bass continue to be caught in the main body of the lake on jigs and plastic worms.

Topwater action for spotted bass has been good in the afternoons, too, said Frankell.
