Perspective: The falsehoods of Humane Society of the United States

Perspective

Despite widespread exposure of who they truly are, and how they spend their money, the California Department of Fish and Game and CalTIP still believe that the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is an organization that sportsmen should team up with — as the DFG and CalTIP have already done. We can understand, if you listen to all the HSUS lies.

The facts are easily obtainable about who HSUS is, so why these two state agencies continue to support this anti-hunting, animal-rights group is a big question. Money, in the case of CalTIP, of course, since they get $5,000 a year from them, and additional monies for poacher rewards. But they were offered three times as much money by supporters of California Outdoor Heritage Alliance (COHA) members to sever the relationship, which Nancy Foley, Chief Law Enforcement officer of the DFG, refused to do. Why?

Of course, what the California head of HSUS, Jennifer Fearing, says to people is probably the same as what the head of the national HSUS, Wayne Pacelle says: “we are only against ‘sport’ hunting.” Or, in other words, any type of hunting that they don’t approve of! And that list is long, since they have tried to stop bear hunting, dove hunting, all forms of trapping, and now they are trying to close down the game bird clubs of California. They’ve already done that in some other states.

They don’t want hunting of any type, and in fact, they don’t want us to have pets, raise animals for food, or even eat meat! Their agenda is very, very clear. So why would a “Department of Fish and Game” support them?

Maybe by lying about their number of members? They do have an interesting way of trying to sound like a far larger organization than they are, by saying “we have millions of members and constituents,” when in fact they have only around 450,000 worldwide. The word “constituents” is open to interpretation, and HSUS includes every single member of every single group that they have association with. That’s like saying Western Outdoor News has “millions of members and constituents,” because there are millions of folks who hunt and fish.

According to Humanewatch.org, the Humane Society of the United States repeatedly claims in the media and in its publications that it represents 11 million “members and constituents,” an impressive “1 in 28” Americans. The implications for this claim are enormous. It indicates that a large segment of the public actively supports HSUS — and, by extension, supports its animal rights agenda. It also gives HSUS clout with legislators when it lobbies them. (“11 million” implies more than 20,000 HSUS “constituents” per Congressional district.)

The Facts: Internal documents show how the Humane Society of the United States defines the word “constituent.” At HSUS, the term includes foundations, community-based humane societies, and even prospective members (a fancy word for people on fundraising mailing lists). HSUS’s actual membership was a mere fraction of the “constituency” it claimed to have.

According to  HumaneWatch.org, and based on HSUS’s 2009 tax return, the HSUS membership magazine All Animals has a circulation of 450,000 subscribers. Given that the magazine is one component of an actual HSUS membership, HSUS’s true support level is likely in the neighborhood of 450,000 people. That’s a far cry from the “11 million” that HSUS claims.

Most Americans don’t believe in animal “rights” as the Humane Society of the United States does. But thanks to a deceptive numbers game, and media campaigns full of pictures of puppies and kittens, HSUS cultivates an image that’s far more mainstream than it actually is. An image that even pervades state agencies like the California Department of Fish and Game and CalTIP.

And the worst thing about it is that slick talkers like Paccelle and Fearing have made big inroads among otherwise intelligent people in our state government who have turned into anti-hunting pawns. To find the truth, all those state representatives have to do is not take Fearing and Pacelle at their word as individuals, but check out the agenda of the organization that gives them a paycheck. Therein lies the truth!!!
