Hoose Saltwater Report: Mag Bay

Last Saturday, fished Mag Bay on the AF BOUNDER- Andy Crean's new ride. The sardine schools were on the 100 fathom line- 12-15 SE of the entrada. The striped marlin fishing was world class- we averaged between 15 and 26 marlin a day- all from throwing on sardine schools/feeders. Find the frigates, and the sardine schools were right below- along with dozens if not hundreds of striped marlin. It was all sight casting- I fished a Penn Torque 200, white 65# Big Game Braid tied via an albright to a 100 yard top shot of #30 Big Game in solar collector. Next, we had a 15' 80# leader tied to an Eagle Claw 2004L 9/0 circle hook. Most of the bites were by 'sight', so as soon as the fish swam 'away' you would reel tight and set-up on the fish. The hi vis helped our captain with line angles on multiple hook ups. At times, there were so many dorado mixed in with the marlin- that you had to pull your bait away from 20-30 lb bulls- just to catch a carp. Anyone who wants to experience a world class striped marlin bite needs to be down here in November- first three weeks are typically best. On the fast troll (12 knots) home each day to the anchorage- we were catching wahoo to 60 lbs on heavy jap heads. Out- Hoose
