NORTH CAL HUNTING REPORT PALOMAR MOUNTAIN -- I decided to stay local instead of taking my chances at Wister in the first-come, first-serve draw and I did not want to end up sitting in the parking lot waiting for a spot to open up while shots ring out in the valley so I elected to hunt a little jump-shoot spot for ducks on My Country Club (MCC) lands. I got there, but the pond had dried up! Shoot, now what to do? So, I switched gears and got on my camo for archery deer on MCC lands on Palomar Mountain where I have had success in the past ! So, getting a late start after dawn I sat in my zone until 9:30 then decided to spot and stalk, and as I slow-trolled the area I jumped a doe, then a while later I saw a doe stand up about 20 yards away, then another stood up, a decent 2X2. I guessed him at 20 yards-plus but had a rock and tree blocking my shot. I moved a bit and that gave me the window I needed at his vitals. I let go with my Matthewes SQ2 NWFT Edition bow and made a good shot ! He and the doe ran off right in front of me! Yes, no ducks but a nice buck, and the day after my 49th birthday, and the closing Saturday of the A22 season ! I walked up to where I hit him and found my arrow, and it was covered with blood tip to tip! ![]() I thought, “It looks like I hit the pump station! He shouldn’t go far.” I went back to the truck for over a hour to let him lay. Then I began what I thought was going to be a short tracking job. First blood was good and steady but this was deep in the forest canopy and leaves so I lost the trail at 75 yards and began to worry. Wounded deer usually go downhill, not up but this buck was moving uphill so I stood and looked, and noticed flies landing on a uphill deer trail. Hmmm, maybe blood. I went uphill and found the blood trail thanks to the flies and yellow jackets on the blood trail. This is the second time I’ve used the bugs to help me locate a deer. Anyway, two hours later and all uphill, there he was! I had as much fun tracking this buck as I did hunting him. So no opening day of duck at Wister but I ended up with a great buck. Thanks, and good hunting! Jeff von Urff is a resident of anta Ysabel ![]() |
