Yellowtail Bonanza at Cedros Island

From July 25th to 28th Cedros Outdoor Adventures ran a fly-in trip with 5 anglers from San Diego and LA. Arriving on Friday we went fishing same afternoon for about 5 hours. At Bajo El Morro and La Baliza (at southern region of Cedros) we caught a number of good-size calicos and sheepheads. Moving to the kelp beds we got some more calicos and one happy fellow snagged a 21 kg (44 lb) yellowtail.
Saturday’s catch was even better as our group scored more calicos, barracudas, white fish and sheepheads. The highlights included a 66 lb grouper and three yellowtails between 11 and 13 kg (24 and 30 lbs).
Sunday we went to Bajo San Agustin, because of reports of abundant yellowtail. We found out they were true! We observed dozens of yellowtail swimming by our pangas and splashing in every direction. One of our pangas snagged 18 yellowtails and the other got 13, ranging between 8 and 10 kg (18 and 25 lbs). That afternoon we relaxed at the kelp beds and got more big calicos.
Fishing was done with bottom jigs, scampi and rapalas, as well as dead bait. Our total for the trip was: 36 yellowtails, 1 big grouper, 25 calicos, 10 sheephead, 6 barracudas, and some other. Out of these we released around ten yellowtails, many smaller calicos, barracudas, and some sheepheads.
The weather was sunny with few clouds in the mornings, almost no wind, and water so clear you could see the fish biting your jigs at 40 ft in the kelp beds. The water temperature around 21C and visibility was more than 40 ft.
