Long time WON subscriber and Western Outdoor News/Lake Havasu Striper Derby contestant, Denis Denardo, passed away April 28. Denis fished the Striper Derby a minimum of 10+ times, won the Father/Son category, and on numerous occasions submitted photos of fishing and hunting adventures. Denis’ 20 year old son, who has been on the leader board from time to time, will be fishing with a new partner this year to carry on the tradition in fishing in the Western Outdoor News Striper Derby. Tight Lines, Denis!

Farm Fest at Irvine Lake— Team 57 recently held its April Farm Fest event at Irvine Lake, and the turnout was impressive. They had a rib contest that went on for hours, and there was so much food, team members were offering plates to other anglers and lake regulars. Oh yeah, the fishing wasn’t too shabby either.

I am a regular reader of WON. My cousin Mike and I just returned from one of my many treks down to Baja. I had a copy of WON and read Gary Graham’s Road Trekker article. It inspired me to love Baja even more than I do.

Attached is a picture of an Osprey with about a 6-foot wing span catching about a 3-pound white sea bass out of the La Bocana Lagoon in Baja Sur.

The Grouper were caught in Bahia De Los Angeles casting close to shore off the northern point of Isla Angle De La Guarda with a green colored sardine lure in the morning hours. It was similar to fishing lake bass. Our boat of 4 caught about 30 grouper in about 1½  hours. We then headed back in to fill up on lingcod.

While fishing Rush Creek above Silver Lake on Monday May 7th, I tied into a trophy Brown trout that measure 20 3/8 inches with a girth of 11½. I was fishing 2 lb Maxima line and tied on a 1/32 lindy jig in a green grub pattern. After a few casts and working the river from the fast water to a deep pool a monster brown rolled on my jig and was hooked. I worked the fish for a few minutes in a deep pool before landing him. Lucky for me he did not swim into the fast water or I would have lost him on my 2 -pound line. My buddies Leo and Cruz helped take pictures and measurements before releasing him back into Rush Creek. Overall my trip to June Loop paid off with over 20+ fish released each day and a nice 1½-  2-pound trout for dinner the 4 days we were there.

Keep your line tight and your rod bent.

While fishing the June Loop at Gull Lake my buddy Leo Pasillas and I tied into limits of trout with fish up to 2½ pounds. The bait of choice was garlic power bait in pale green on a short leader and also fishing a dropper rig with a key lime trout king floating worm tied 18 inched from the weight. Water conditions and weather were perfect and the full moon had little effect when fishing early morning or late in the afternoon. Most people we talked to had little to no trout action, which was most likely associated to the time they were fishing. Although the mornings were a bit nippy, it’s the early worm that catches the fish.
