Scuba diving the San Diego area, I had already speared a 23-inch halibut. 30 minutes into the dive I came across another one, almost took a shot but decided it looked to small, so got some GoPro video of it instead. No more then three minutes passed by when I came around a big rock in the sand and laid out in front of me was the biggest halibut I have ever seen. In less then a nanno second I pointed my 27" Riffe speargun right to the head within 5 inches. Then it was off to the races. I have 50-feet of line on a reel and was not sure if I made a clean shot, but it spooled my line. I nervously started to reel it in and felt that it was still on there. It came into view and I got some cool video. It wasn't moving. It looked like a prehistoric beast under water. The colors were faded looking, not bright. I poked at it and blamm it took off again spooling my line, but I could see that the tip went in good and solid. I was low on air so I decided to swim back to my kayak. Thankfully, it helped out by swimming past me in the direction I was going. It obviously did not fit in my kayak so I tied a rope to my stringer and towed it back in. Back on shore I was so stoked, I gave the small halibut to a guy fishing who had no luck.

Zane Sieger, 9 years old, landed a trophy size bluefin tuna on his first long range trip. Zane caught the 114.0-pound bluefin on a 6-day trip aboard the Polaris Supreme. In addition to the bluefin, Zane also caught a 30-pound yellowfin and numerous 20- to 25-pound yellowtail. Thanks to Tommy Rothery and the crew of the Polaris Supreme!
