SOUTH CAL White Seabass Championship Slated for May 15-16 at Two Harbors, Catalina TWO HARBORS, Catalina Island – The white seabass season will slowly be building momentum, and last year was one of the finest, both at the islands as well as on the coast. Those two areas are fair game for boats to compete in the annual WON/Yamaha Catalina Island White Seabass Championship, slated for the third weekend in May at Two Harbors, May 15-16.Directing the event is WON Editor Pat McDonell, who also directs the Cabo Tuna Jackpot in November. “I’ve missed just one tournament over the years, either covering it for WON or serving as co-director or director, so the transition will be smooth,” said McDonell. “I expect few changes. My goal is always to run a fair and fun tourney, and that is my focus for this event in May for both myself and assistant director/ weighmaster Mike Packard.” Cost is still $85 per person until two weeks prior to the event, and then it’s $100 per person for teams. There will also be the three optional jackpots at $100, $200 and $300 for each species of halibut, seabass and yellowtail with 90 percent payback. First place will be $4,000 in cash and prizes, second is $1,500 and prizes, third place is $1,000 and added this year are payout of $400 and $300, respectively for fourth and fifth place. There will be drawings for great trips and tackle, too. Part of the entry fee will go to event visors and t-shirts provided by Berkley and WON, and a barbecue chicken lunch on Friday before the captains meeting commences. Also part of the tourney will be the Costa/Avet/Graftech Casting Contest, back by popular demand, and the Berkley knot typing contest, with cash prizes third place. Bring your A Game! In terms of conservation and science, this event again welcomes the Hubbs research team as they scan dead fish at weigh-in for the presence of binary (wire) code tags that wouyld indicate they are hatchery fish. A broodstock collection effort is also being conducted before the event and during the event, with prize incentives. In addition, it is likely the Pfleger Institute will offer a $5,000 award to the first team to turn in a fish that has on of the Pfleger tags. Squid light boats from San Pedro Bait Company (owned by Paul Strasser and Mark Pisano of the long range sportfisher Independence and 22nd Street Landing), will be available to sell live bait outside Two Harbors, and you’ll get a free bait co. t-shirt for buying bait from San Pedro Bait Co. Mark your calendars for the event. Saturday and Sunday, May 15-16. Look for an entry form on this website www.wonews.com (see events) or in WON in the coming weeks. Call (949) 366-0030, ext 33. ![]() • LUNCH ON SATURDAY just prior to the Captains Meeting is provided by WON, while teams will be able to pick their free Berkley/WON event visors and t-shirts. • BOB HOOSE OF BERKLEY will be at Catalina again, providing shirts and hats to each angler, handing out line in the prize drawings and hosting the cash-friendly Berkley Knot Tying Contest. • THE LAST THREE YEARS the tourney has averaged 95 teams. Look for the field to be over 100 teams this year if the fishing is as good as it was last year. Payouts to fifth place, nine optional jackpots for three species, free drawings, cash for knot tying and rod/reel combos for casting are part of the two-day fun at Two Harbors. YAMAHA 2010 Catalina White Seabass Championship schedule Saturday, May 15 Check-in: Teams must check in at Two Harbors, Catalina between 9:30 a.m. and noon on Saturday. New sign-ups cost $100 a person, as do any additional team members added after April 30. You’ll be getting your free t-shirt and embroidered event visor by Berkley/WON. Most important, you will update/finalize your team roster and your team members will fill out the waiver at the check-in table AND index card that will serve as a ticket for all drawings. We also will take in optional jackpot money — cash only, at $100, $200 and $300 for white seabass, yellowtail and halibut (six optionals total). We prefer teams to pay optionals in advance. Barbecue/drawings: Lunch starts at noon and activities will include a barbeque lunch, a short team meeting, a drawing for prizes, and “around” 2 p.m. you will be released to fish. Sunday, May 16 Weigh-in and awards: The scale area at the pier will open at 10 a.m. and close at noon. Don’t be late. Teams must decide which single seabass, yellowtail or halibut to weigh prior to reaching the weigh-in area, and teams can weigh in one fish of each species only. Awards presentation: Will start at approximately 1 p.m. and be completed by 2:30 p.m. Don’t miss the awards presentation even if your team doesn’t catch a seabass, yellowtail or halibut that qualifies for prizes or cash. There’s a wad of prizes from sponsors to be given in away in a drawing, so stick around. ![]() TWO HARBORS is a beautiful venue for the event at Catalina Island. ![]() |
