SOUTH CAL Schweit River Reports

KERNVILLE — Now that the Kern River is back on the DFG stocking schedule, it should come as little surprise the Upper River received yet another plant of trophy trout this past week (Wednesday the 24th, more specifically), and anglers rejoiced in the arrival of the quality rainbows.

“It’s unbelievable,” said John Strange at Sierra Gateway Market. “Fish and Game put in another 150 trout last Wednesday between the Powerhouse and the park in town. I’ve had a lot of fish over 5 pounds come in.”

Chuck Brand of San Pedro bagged a pair of quality ‘bows at 5.5 and 5 pounds using Panther Martins at Kernville Park. Chris Schull of Bakersfield managed a 5.4 pounder using salmon eggs at the same locale. Jimbo Moss of Redondo Beach bested a 5-pound rainbow on the same bait fished at Rivernook Campground. Neil Shotwell of Ridgecrest nailed a matching fish on a Panther Martin at Riverside Park.

“It’s been awesome!” Strange exclaimed. “I’ve had reports of a lot of fish caught. It’s been really good, and the weather’s incredible! The river’s running at a little over 800 cfs. It’s a little off-color, but not enough to hurt the fishing.”

Rainbow trout action continues to shine at the Santa Ana River Lakes

ANAHEIM — The trout action has continued to be good at the Santa Ana River Lakes thanks to weekly plants. The average rainbow has been around 1 to 11⁄2 pounds, but many stringers have 3 to 6-pound rainbows.

The top trout reported this week were a pair of 61⁄2 pounders. The first was part of a 7-fish, 15-pound stringer caught by Erik Buena of East Los Angeles, fishing rainbow Eagle Claw Dough along the east shoreline. The other was landed by Carlos Sanchez of Orange while fishing chartreuse Eagle Claw Dough near the boat dock.

Ulyses Garcia of Huntington Park had a 24-hour, 15-fish limit that weighed in at 22 pounds, with a 51⁄2 pounder his best fish. All were landed on chartreuse Eagle Claw Dough off of Sandy Beach. Ken Sakamoto of Riverside landed a 51⁄2-pound lightning trout, while John Nakamura of Walnut caught a 5.4-pound rainbow.

Anglers are reminded to continue to report all their catches at the tackle shop and have photos taken. All limits reported and all trout over 5 pounds are worth a free, one-year subscription to Western Outdoor News. Existing subscribers can get half off on a one-year renewal.

A big upcoming event is a special brown trout and sturgeon plant slated for four days, from March 18-21; with rainbows also planted (as usual). The browns will be up to 5 pounds and the sturgeon will be 8 to 25 pounds. Anglers can now keep sturgeon 15 pounds or under and experience this incredible gourmet fish on the table.
