SOUTH CAL LONG RANGE UPDATE All eyes are on the “Lower Banks” right now, as boats look to connect on the first “cows” of the season along the “beach,” which is the generic term used for fishing “the inside” for “cows.” (Man there’s a lot of slang in this fishing stuff.)Putting in legwork to find big fish is always a gamble, and so far nobody has hit the jackpot. The First String, however, hit 7-7-7 on its 10-day trip that it got in on Thursday morning. It was everything you hope to get in on in terms of a 10-day. Well, if you like variety fishing, anyways. The boat’s owner/operator, Bradley Phillips, gave me a call last night to give me his run-down/you-should-have-been-here description of the trip. Last Friday and Saturday when the vast majority of the long range boats were at the dock or on their way back down to the Ridge, the First String was on the Ridge all by itself, save for a few yachts. The combination of not getting fished for a few days and having a full moon passing through, made for good wahoo fishing (e.g. no boats pounding the “new schools” of wahoo that love to move into the shallows on the full moon). “Most of the guys have 4 or 5 wahoo,” said Phillips of the catch of 79 skinnies. In wahoo terms, that’s a lot — they hooked at least 200 to get that. There were a lot of big ones in the mix, too — the biggest looks to be around 70 pounds. Tuna fishing was great on 30 to 40 pounders, and it was all-you-want on 12- to 15-pound yellowtail. There were also some grouper in the mix. In other words, it was the epitome of Ridge fishing. A stop at Cedros on the way home proved there are some big yellows at the island—they had some go-rounds on 28- to 45-pound yellows to end the trip on. Prior to the First String, the Royal Star and Vagabond also had good hits on wahoo. The Vag had over 100 for its trip! The big cows might not be biting yet, but the skinnies sure are. ![]() |
