SD BOATS TAP ISLANDS AND INSHORE FOR YELLOWS

SD BOATS TAP CORONADOS, POINT LOMA, LA JOLLA FOR SHOTS AT YELLOWS. H&M Landing’s Malihini gets best island score of the year with 91 good-grade yellowtail

SAN DIEGO — Three quarter and half-day boats are enjoying their best fishing of the year out at the Coronados as well as along the coast off Point Loma and La Jolla.

The Coronados have been giving up the best shots, thanks to new batches of yellowtail and even a few bluefin tuna showing up from the Middle Grounds down to South Island.

“They’re all good-grade yellowtail for the post part,” said Fisherman III owner/operator J.D. McGriff on a call to WON. Saturday McGriff had 43 yellowtail and one bluefin to go with 17 bonito and 6 calico bass. “For the most part they are 15 to 25 pounders, but we had a few 28 to 30 pounders. They’re been biting the bait and the jigs. The mint Tady 45 has been working and so have the smaller jigs like the 7X Jrs.”

The fishing really got going on Wednesday, when Mikey Schmidt, co-owner/operator of the ¾-day boat Malihini out of H&M Landing, put his 41 three-quarter day anglers on 91 yellowtail, 5 calico bass and 60 sand bass. This was after putting 41 yellows on the boat the day before. Since then, boats have averaged from 8 to 60-plus yellows a day at the Coronados.

“The water is good, around 71 degrees,” added McGriff. “It’s been both anchor and run-and-gun fishing. The current has been going out to sea in the mornings, so it’s been more run and gun in the morning and anchoring up later in the day when the current gets switched around.”

As far as the bluefin goes, there have been some good signs of the small B.F.T. around South Island.

“They are small, around 12 pounds,” said McGriff of the tuna that have been taken alongside the yellowtail.

On Sunday the Point Loma scored 2 of the bluefin to go with its 21 yellowtail, 5 barracuda, 2 calico bass and 1 bonito while on a ¾-day out of Point Loma Sportfishing. The Mission Belle had the hot hand on Sunday while on a ¾-day out of the same landing. The trip’s 43 anglers ended up with 63 yellows, 4 calico bass, 6 barracuda, 16 bonito and 1 rockfish.

While the islands have been giving up the best numbers of yellowtail for ¾ days, the local half-day boats have been getting some good shots on yellows as well.

Point Loma gave up some of the best scores in recent memory thanks to having some small-grade yellows swimming around the kelp line. There’s been good bonito and calico bass fishing as well.

A half-day charter on the Fisherman III put on by Maritime Merchant Services was good for 11 yellowtail to 12 pounds on Friday’s afternoon half-day. The Premier, H&M’s open party half-day boat, turned in 5 yellowtail, 95 calico bass, 5 barracuda and 21 bonito on Friday’s afternoon trip. Sunday afternoon didn’t turn up any yellowtail after the morning trip turned up one ‘tail, but the bass fishing was good, and 26 anglers sacked 105 calico bass, 16 barracuda and 14 bonito.

Point Loma Sportfishing’s Daily Double has had some yellows as of late, too. Saturday morning’s half-day with 69 passengers returned with 5 yellowtail, 95 calico bass, 5 barracuda and 21 bonito.

Up off La Jolla the yellowtail fishing continues to be incredibly consistent, with most every half-day trip getting a shot at the yellows. Tuesday morning had the New Seaforth out of Seaforth Sportfishing sack 14 yellowtail, 4 calico bass, 2 sand bass, 41 barracuda and 53 bonito. On Friday Mission Bay Sportfishing’s Dolphin had its best count in the morning when 21 yellows, 80 bonito, 16 rockfish and 5 barracuda got turned into fillets.
