‘LOCAL’ WAHOO:

Holiday gets a skinny 53 miles from Point Loma on overnight trip

SAN DIEGO — It’s been the best mixed-bag fishing in years on the offshore scene for everything from kelp paddy dorado to open water bluefin, so maybe it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that a wahoo was caught on a overnight run on the Holiday out of Point Loma Sportfishing last Saturday.

The wahoo, which weighed 33 pounds, bit on the troll for angler Denny Hirzel of Chula Vista. As “rare” as the catch is, don’t be surprised if more wahoo pop up in the counts — the Holiday hooked a handful of bait fish that bit anglers off after the Tyler got his ‘hoo on the troll and other boats have reported getting trolling jigs bit off.

“We were outside the 295, down around 50 miles near the 500 bump,” said the Holiday’s skipper Randy Dalo on an interview with WON Saturday night. “It wasn’t the only one. They boiled up and everything. We hooked a few on bait but they bit the guys off.”

Wahoo have been caught out of San Diego during El Ninos in the past, but Tyler’s ‘was the first wahoo caught within one day range of San Diego since the turn of the century.
