SOUTHERN CAL WEEKLY SALT REPORTS

LOS ANGELES — Ginny Wylie at Wylie’s Bait and Tackle said “It’s really been a week!” Unfortunately, she didn’t mean for fishing—she meant for snotty weather. This winter has been a tough one on surf fishermen. Still, a few brave souls ventured out last week. The few reports to come back to Wylie’s were that of a few leopard sharks around the Big Rock area (although mostly for anglers fishing off their decks). Anglers hitting the Malibu Pier found a few small perch a couple of shovel nose sharks.

ORANGE COUNTY — Bobby Leineau at Big Fish Bait and Tackle in Seal Beach said that about 80 percent of the anglers checking in last week were hiding from the weather in Alamitos Bay and from the Belmont pier to the 72nd Place Jetty. “It’s been pretty good on the bay side on corbina — it’s been on fresh mussel,” said Leineau, who weighed a 3.8-pound corbina for Jim King. “It’s been bigger fish in bay, and most of it has been sight fishing—fluorocarbon is a must for the bigger fish. “From 72nd place to the Belmont Pier there’s been lots of short male halibut,” added Leineau. There’s also been some better-grade fish around. Big Fish checked in on at 12 pounds. An 18.6 pounder caught by Billy Dang on a Berkley Gulp! Jerk Shad in the Nuclear Chicken color was the biggest of the week. There has also been fair spot fin croaker action on the westside of the 72nd Place Jetty on both fresh and frozen ghost shrimp.

SAN DIEGO — Surf reports continue to be pretty slim. “Nothing to report this week because conditions pretty much kept folks off the beaches,” was the words from Hugh Cobb at Pacific Coast Bait and Tackle. With better weather hopefully in the future, Pacific Coast will be offering its annual surf fishing tournaments again this year. The first is its surfperch derby in March, which will be followed up by a halibut derby in May and a croaker derby in June. The tournament series will end in July with a corbina derby. “As always,” Cobb said, “Prizes in the from of store certificates will be awarded.”
