This weekend, July 10-11, marks the second annual Bill Poole Memorial Angling Tournament.Originally dubbed the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute Tournament, the event was renamed to honor the legendary long-range fishing pioneer and sportsman Bill Poole. This year’s contest will be held Saturday, July 10th, with a gala awards barbeque and fundraiser the following day. Tickets for the July 11 awards banquet may be purchased separately. The banquet — held at HSWRI’s lovely bayside headquarters — will feature close-up encounters with SeaWorld animals, rare behind-the-scenes looks at Hubbs-SeaWorld hatchery and breeding programs, and a raffle/auction sponsored by recreational fishing industry’s top personalities and manufacturers. Seating is limited, so pre-registration is recommended, but sign-ups are taken at the door if there is space available. There will be on-site demonstrations of the latest Shimano gear by Shimano staff and pro staffers, Power Pro and Power Pro Hollow Ace connections seminars, Lucanus/Butterfly jigging seminars; raffle prizes, promotions and contests; and on-site reel repairs and clinics. Let’s Talk Hook-Up will also be broadcasting live, and one raffle winner will receive a $1,000 Shimano gift certificate. There will even be a special guest appearance by Michael Fowlkes of Inside Sportfishing. Aug. 21-22: The San Diego Rod and Reel Club’s 27th Annual Big Fish Tournament. The Big Fish Tournament is the club’s annual fundraiser through which they support their main mission — assisting in kids’ fishing activities. The tournament and the pre-tournament seminar draw anglers from all over California and Arizona, and the proceeds from the seminar raffle are used to finance the saltwater fishing trips they sponsor for children in their community. Along with their partner organizations, they also promote annual youth fishing derbies at Lake Poway, Lindo Lakes and at Crystal Pier. These events would not be possible without your support. The Fiesta will take place at the Wide Open Baja facility in Irvine. To go along with the Baja theme, The Harbor Grill, which is located in Dana Point Harbor, will be providing tacos and Coronas for the tournament anglers in attendance. Tournament sponsors will be displaying and available for meet and greet time. There will be a raffle, seminars and other informal question and answer sessions with top West Coast captains. SEPTEMBER 2010 Sept. 4: The Yellowtail Derby kicks off, and participating anglers can fish from private or open-party vessels. The event runs for 20 days. Derby headquarters is located at the Outboard Boating Club at the Trailer Boat Ramp on Shelter Island Drive in San Diego. The Derby mailing address is 3960 W. Point Loma Blvd., Ste. For more information, visit www.themarlinclub.com for more details. Sept. 10-11: The Recycled Fish 24-Hour Fish-A-Thon. Open to freshwater anglers in all 50 states. To participate, anglers begin by becoming a Fish-A-Thon Ambassador/Team Leader at www.recycledfish.org, and sign up their team of two to four anglers. After they receive their Fish-A-Thon welcome kit in the mail, each team member’s next step is to secure pledges from family, friends or co-workers for each hour they fish, which typically range from $10 to $75 an hour. Next they go fishing. Lines are cast Friday, Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. until Saturday, Sept. 11 at 6 p.m. During the event, anglers are also encouraged to pick up any trash and use tackle that is easier on the environment, such as lead-free weights or biodegradable baits and lures, and practice good catch-and-release tactics. Every team raising a minimum of $100 will get a complimentary 24-Hour Fish-A-Thon shirt for all team members, plus additional prizes like tackle, apparel and gift cards. Sept. 19-21: The Crow’s Nest Avalon Billfish Classic and Crow’s Nest Catalina Classic. Check-in will be on the afternoon of Sept. 19 at the Descanso Beach Club.
