EASTERN SIERRA REPORT

MAMMOTH LAKES  -- Last week saw rain showers in the Bishop area and snow flurries at higher elevations with no impact on the mid-winter fishing scene.

Bishop area waters saw the catch and release wild trout section of the Owens River top producer for anglers working small nymphs and midges. Nightcrawlers were producing in the unrestricted Owens River and Pleasant Valley Reservoir waters. The inlet end, the boat ramp area and the face of the dam producing stockers and an occasional heavyweight DFG broodstock. Alpers rainbows are on the agenda beginning Feb. 19.

Up the road, there was very little pressure at Hot Creek and Upper Owens River. Deep snow  presented  the usual access problem. For anglers willing to exercise, small nymphs and midges were working well with a late morning to mid afternoon bite window.

In the Brigdheport area, the  East Walker River was  producing on small midges, nymphs and streamers with a mixture on rainbows and browns averaging 14 to 16 inches and an occasional catch over the 20-inch mark. Around one foot of snow was on the ground with roadside access presenting little problem.
