SIERRA REPORT FRESH UPDATE

JUNE LAKE—Going into the second week of the season, trophy class brown trout continue to make an Eastern Sierra showing. This time the winning combination was June Lake, Rancho Cucamonga angler Dan Blanco and a 15-pound, 10-ounce brown trout.

On a cold (temperatures in the high teens) and breezy Wednesday morning Blanco was fishing close to the tule-lined shoreline, a short distance east of June Lake Marina, and soaking red salmon egg Power Bait.

“I thought I was snagged. It was just dead weight, no give” said Blanco. “Then it began to slowly swim, little short heavy runs .I was using 4-pound mono with a 2-pound fluorocarbon leader, it took right around 40 to 50 minutes to bring the fish in close enough to net.”

Blanco is an avid kayak angler who visits the Eastern Sierra several times a year. This was his first trip of the season with hitting the water with his kayak the original plan. However because of a stiff breeze and cold conditions he opted for a rental boat at the marina—a good decision.

His catch came on week after Bishop angler Dan Stewart weighed in a 14-pound, 14-ounce Lower Twin Lake catch during similar inclement weather. However, there’s one additional factor which has surfaced in other trophy brown trout catches covered by this writer The day before Dan hooked his trophy, DFG had made the first plant of the season of stocker rainbows—ideal size for stimulating a heavyweight brown trout diet.

The catch is in the hands of Davidson Taxidermy, and will be on display at June Lake Marina in the near future.
