Trout bite remains solid at the Santa Ana River Lakes

Western Outdoor NewsPublished: May 03, 2012

ANAHEIM — The trout bite has stayed good at the Santa Ana River Lakes over the past week. The best action has continued to be on floating dough baits or the new mouse-style baits from Berkley and Lip RipperZ, and dousing any of the baits with a scent has been a good idea.

With the warming weather, anglers are having the best luck fishing in the deeper water; with Chris’ Pond, the spillway, and Three Pipes all producing a lot of rainbows.

Carl Adamo and Sarah Legaspi, both of San Pedro, had 9 rainbows for a total stringer weight of 20 pounds. The big fish was a 6.3 pounder and they were fishing Power Mice with corn Love Sauce. Al Hull of Carson topped off his 3-fish, 9½-pound stringer with a 4.4-pound rainbow he caught on chartreuse floating bait with garlic Love Sauce.

A typical limit has been around 10 pounds for 5 fish. Luis Rodriguez of Santa Ana had 5 rainbows to 3½ pounds on Salmon Peach PowerBait while fishing at the Pump House. Daniel Duran, Samuel Reyes and Anthony Gonzalez, all of La Puente, had 6 trout for 17 pounds using chartreuse dough bait with garlic Love Sauce in deep water at the Bubble Hole.

There is an ongoing big trout contest running now through Sunday, May 13; and the angler who catches the largest trout on a Lip RipperZ product will win a free $500 Turner’s Outdoorsman shopping spree. And all anglers who land any trout on a Lip RipperZ product and have their picture taken by one of the lake guides or at the lakes’ web cam will be eligible for a May 13 drawing for a second $500 shopping spree.
