APPLE VALLEY — Although last week’s weather was on the inclement side, it was unseasonably warm in the high desert, and Jess Ranch Lakes’ anglers took advantage of the comfortable temps to score solid numbers of rainbows.

TINA AND FRED BUHL of Hesperia (far left and right) hoist the stringer of rainbows they caught this past week at the Jess Ranch Lakes. Tina’s big fish tipped the scale at 5.14 pounds, while Fred’s weighed in at. 4.2. Both were taken on PowerBait fished from the western shore of Lake 2.

“Drizzle, rain and warmer temperatures with little or no wind gave anglers a change from typical high-desert weather and kicked up the bite for anglers,” said lakes’ staffer Theresa Llao. “The trout bite was very good this past week, with anglers using PowerBait (especially garlic and salmon egg), jigs and lures to catch limits and lots of fish over 2 pounds. Hot spots included the eastern logged shore and grassy point of Lake 2, as well as the western and northern shores of Lake 2.”

Tina Buhl of Hesperia caught a 5-pound, 14-ounce rainbow on garlic PowerBait while fishing the western shore of Lake 2 with her husband Fred, who reeled in a 4.2 pounder using Salmon Peach egg PowerBait.
