BIG BEAR LAKE — Quality trout have been the rule at Big Bear Lake as of late, and the action for the big ’bows has been nearly as hot as the weather; with rainbows to an impressive 10.74 pounds reported this past week.

“Trollers resumed their assault on the trout,” said Alan Sharp at Big Bear Marina. “Going down to three colors of leadcore with a variety of spoons in numerous colors was putting trout in the boat. Whether they be Needlefish, Thomas Buoyants, Dick Nite spoons or Phoebes, the trout just seemed to hit all of them. The east end from Eagle Point to Stanfield is slowing down as the water temps go up and the oxygen levels drop. Most of the good action is happening from the observatory west to Windy Point.”

Fishing off Windy Point with her family, 13-year-old Katte (no last name provided), scored a 10.74-pound rainbow while soaking garlic PowerBait on 4-pound test. “The 10.74 trout gave her quite the fight,” Sharp noted, “and finally gave up as it wedged itself between some rocks. Not willing to give up the fight, Katte waded in up to her waist to get a hold of her trophy. When she arrived at the scales, she was shivering not from excitement but from the chill of the water.” Luke Jeffery of Moreno Valley was fishing with guide Curt Dills of Fish Big Bear Charter Service when he nailed an 8.69-pound trout on a gold Phoebe off Gilner Point.

“Bait anglers soaking PowerBait along the north shore continue to nail quality fish,” Sharp added.
