ESCONDIDO — While plenty of 3- to 5-pound catfish are making for happy anglers at Dixon Lake, it’s the double-digit models that have been making headlines as of late. “Quite a few catfish in the 3- to 5-pound range have been coming in,” said Ranger Richard Studinka, “all on mackerel. The best fishing areas have been the buoy line and the two closest piers from the boat dock.” There was a pair of quality kitties weighed last week, with the biggest being a 14-pound, 10 ouncer and belonging to Jed Dickerson of Carlsbad. “He landed the monster near Bass Cove on cut mackerel,” Studinka noted. Not to be left out, Noe (no last name provided) of Vista managed a 13½ pounder while soaking a piece of hot dog in Whisker Bay. “The overall best baits have been cut mackerel, sardines, chicken liver or shrimp. “Bluegill action is warming up,” Studinka added, “with some up to a pound near the weeded, covered areas of the lake. Try using redworms or mealworms for the ’gills.” ![]() JED DICKERSON of Carlsbad scored this 14-pound, 10-ounce catfish while soaking mackerel in Dixon Lake's Bass Cove this past week. |
