Trout plants kick the swimbait bite into gear at DVL

HEMET — Although trout plants have been arriving at Diamond Valley Lake for a few months now, there have only been a few weeks when the stocks produced substantial numbers of largemouth and/or stripers as a result. In other words, anglers tossing swimbaits have been rewarded sporadically for their big-bait endeavors. Well, last week was one such occasion.

“Bass fishing is good,” said Store Supervisor at Diamond Valley Lake Marina, Kimmi Champagne. “The swimbait bite is good, and even better after the trout plants. Drop-shotting, Texas rigging and Carolina rigging have also still been productive. There were a lot of quality fish reported this past week.”

Randy Sapp of Vista bagged an 11-pound largemouth on a swimbait. Matt Johnson of Hemet had a 7.75 pounder on a Lunker Punker, and David Patrick of Hemet scored a 6.29-pound fish on a plastic worm.

Not surprisingly, the trout plants spurred the stripers, too. “Striper fishing was also good,” Champagne said. “Trout pattern swimbaits are working, especially after the trout plants. Cut bait (sardines or anchovies) is also still effective.”

Art Berry of San Diego had linesides of 28 and 22 pounds on swimbaits, and Cary Barnes of Perris used cut bait from shore for a 15 pounder.

Of course, trout fishing has been outstanding with all of the fish being dumped into the lake as of late, and there have indeed been a few brute ‘bows caught.

“Trout fishing has been good on PowerBait, minijigs and nightcrawlers,” Champagne noted. “The next trout stock is scheduled for this Thursday, Feb. 2.”

Eight-year-old Christopher Hugunin Jr. of Mentone nailed a massive 11.25-pound rainbow while working an orange Power Trout Worm from shore (see the First-Person Report in this issue). Eleven-year-old Eli Louk of Los Angeles used a Super Duper for a 5.5 pounder.
