Hesperia: Lake gets huge stock, big rainbows biting

HESPERIA — Management at Hesperia Lake has clearly been making a lot of effort to supplement the trout stocking it was already getting with additional plants of quality Mount Lassen rainbows. They’re still trying to get the numbers ironed out, and after a modest 500-pound delivery on Feb. 13, the lake took on 2,000 pounds of Mount Lassens on Feb. 26, which resulted in red-hot fishing.

“After the stock, the MTA crew headed out to check out the bite,” said Jeff Cottini of Mountain Top Anglers. “It was no problem getting limits and then some. Black minnows were the ticket on a double drop-shot rig, and the hot spots were The Finger and Drain.”

Cottini went on to tell Western Outdoor News that Hesperia angler Joe Franco landed a few in the 6- to 7-pound range.

Another local trouter, Matt McIntosh of Hesperia, reached out to WON after sticking rainbows of 7.88 and 6.8 pounds while drop-shotting a Golden State Fishing Galaxy Minnow in black at the Finger.

These plastic minnows are all the rage at Hesperia Lake, and they’ve accounted for a huge percentage of the bigger rainbows caught there this season. Black and white are the most popular colors, and they are also effective when fished on a leadhead.

THIS HESPERIA LAKE trout went 6.8 pounds caught by Matt McIntosh on a Golden State Fishing Galaxy Minnow in Hesperia Lake wasn’t the only biggie he caught in recent outings. The local angler also bagged a 7.88 pounder.
