Quick limits collected at Lake Poway after first catfish stock

BY MIKE STEVENS/WON Staff WriterPublished: Jul 13, 2017

POWAY — Catfish stocking and nigh fishing are officially underway at Lake Poway, and anglers are getting quick limits on the fresh fish in the 75-degree water. A 2,600-pound delivery on July 7 got the 2017 party started.

quicklimitsQUICK LIMITS OF catfish came for Brian and Mihailo Radibratovic who used cut mackerel at Lake Poway’s Log Boom.

Brian and Mihailo Radibratovic limited in just a couple hours while attacking the Log Boom with cut mackerel. While the regular stocking and huge holdover population will make catfish a worthy target on most popular boat and shore fishing locations, the Log Boom should be the hot spot all summer, and there is plenty of room to operate out there. Light line down to 6-pound and a hunk of mackerel fished with little or no weight is the local secret for Poway cats.

Night fishing also kicked off on the 7th, and it runs until 11:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. Boats need to be back at the dock at 11 p.m. sharp, and all anglers need to have a lantern. The next three stocks (after July 7) on the schedule are July 21, Aug. 4 and Aug. 18, and each of those are 1,300-pound plants.

Bass fishing has been good for a few weeks for anglers fishing finesse tactics like drop-shots, Senkos and Ned Rigs in pockets of open water in or behind weedy areas, mostly in the backs of coves.
