Southern CA Freshwater Fishing Report

Spice up your Superbowl weekend by hitting the water

SOUTHERN, CA — Sure you’ll be watching the big game this Sunday, but what about the rest of the weekend? Well, fortunately, there are a number of lakes playing host to burgeoning bites at the moment, so you have plenty of options.

First and foremost, Lake Cachuma: The recent warm weather has the lake’s large and smallmouth heading for the shallows. In fact, staffers reported fish as shallow as 3 feet this past week. Grab the kids and your tackle box and head on up, or down, as it were. Most all baits are producing to some degree.

If it’s trout you’re after, Cachuma has those, too; however, Lake Skinner has been playing host to a solid bite as of late. Most anglers are averaging 3 to 4 rainbows per rod, and a number of those fish are in the 2-pound class. Stick with nightcrawlers, trout marshmallows or PowerBait and you should do just fine. Ramp 2 has been a hot spot for shore anglers.

Silverwood has both bass and trout, and the panfish are just now starting to perk up a bit at Perris.

In other words, if the weather remains as it has been, get out this weekend and enjoy the sunshine and some time with the family before Superbowl Sunday.
