DANA POINT — The water is warming up locally and a mix of sardines and anchovy at the receivers at Dana Point has produced a nice set of bass and rockfish options for anglers on local and island trips. This seems to be the situation on the entire coast as the local spring fishing is coming on strong and it looks to be not just a normal year, but actually an exceptional one if it keeps progressing. “We have the anchovy and that 4- to 5-inch stuff gets the bass going on the chum, and the water has been warming up,” said Travis Tomkins at Dana Wharf Sportfishing. Skiff anglers have been working for a trophy biscuit. Monster white seabass, several of them over 50 pounds and topped by two tournament fish of 59 pounds and 62.5 pounds weighed in on Sunday, were caught under the bird schools on live squid over the weekend and brought back to Catalina for the weigh-in. Tompkins said the local partyboat runs have been really kicking in. For example, on the 17th the Sum Fun half-day run with 24 people had 74 calicos, 4 sand bass, 2 sculpin and 24 sheephead, while the ¾-day run on the Clemente saw 29 customers catch 57 calicos, 16 sand bass, 8 sculpin, 2 sheephead and 12 rockfish on Saturday. The Saturday all-day run to San Clemente by the Fury had 26 people bag 46 calico, 3 sculpin, 19 sheephead, 24 whitefish, 59 rockfish, 1 halibut and 2 cabezon. |
