Thunderbird slams bottom biters, 69 yellowtail

DANA POINT/NEWPORT — Capt. Brian Woolley, reporting for Dana Wharf Sportfishing, said, "Weekly total of bass caught and kept and caught and released: 6,279! Biting!!" Local water temps hovered betwen 68 and 70 degrees this past week and the bite was on up the coast.

"Fly-lined sardines fished best but the die-hard rubber guys had plenty to catch as well," he followed up. In addition, the landing's 3/4-day boats headed south and found great bass action that direction as well. In addition the yellowtail have shown up, not yet biting but putting on a show.

As for the island run, the Fury fished Catalina Island’s east end and found great bass bites both front and backside, along with shots at yellowtail, barracuda and a few bonito.

Sunday the Fury's 22 anglers caught 243 calico and kept 43, along with 3 yellows, 5 barracuda, 4 bonito, 3 sheephead and 10 half moon.

Sunday the Thunderbird snuck out to Santa Barbara Island along with the San Pedro and Long Beach overnight boats and whacked the yellows hard, managing to hang on to almost 70, despite hungry sea lions.

The hot game fish snap came with mega ocean whitefish too — 247 turned in along with more than 50 other bottom biters and 11 barracuda plus a few calico.

As for Davey's Locker and Newport Landing's local boats, the sculpin bite continued to go full speed with up to full boat limits recorded. The Western Pride's 45 anglers Saturday a.m. and pulled 215 scullies plus a couple dozen white sea-fish.

As for the Freelance 3/4-day, they've been sacking numbers of sculpin too and Catalina Island provided some 3-B action on top of it all.

Wednesday the 24, 1/2-day anglers fishing the Aggressor combined for full boat limits of sculpin (120) plus 18 whitefish.
